  • 4 pieces Hot Dogs Choose your favorite kind, preferably classic beef franks.
  • 1 pound Ground Beef 80/20 mix recommended for juiciness.
  • 1 cup Cheddar Cheese Sharp cheddar preferred for tang.
  • 20 ounces Tater Tots Use frozen tater tots.
  • 1/2 cup Onion (optional) Sautéed for added flavor.
  • to taste Ketchup and Mustard For serving.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven according to the instructions on the tater tots package.
  • Place the tater tots on a baking sheet and cook according to package directions until golden and crispy.
  • Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Drain excess fat from the cooked beef using a colander.
  • If using, add chopped onions to the skillet and sauté for 1 minute until softened.
  • Slice each hot dog lengthwise three-quarters deep without cutting all the way through.
  • Stuff the sliced hot dogs with cooked ground beef and a slice of cheddar cheese.
  • Place the stuffed hot dogs on a baking tray and bake for 5-7 minutes until the cheese melts.
  • Serve with crispy tater tots, ketchup, and mustard.

Notes

You can prep the ground beef a day ahead for a quicker cooking time. For a crispy finish, reheat leftovers in the oven instead of the microwave.
