For the Crust and Crumbles

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Base of the crumb mixture, adds richness and flavor.
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed Gives the bars a lovely caramel flavor while keeping the texture moist.
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Provides structure and helps bind everything together.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Balances the sweetness.
  • 1 cup caramel sauce Preferably homemade; store-bought works too.
  • 1/2 cup sea salt (for topping) Adds sophistication and excitement to the bars.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances the overall flavor.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan, optionally line it with parchment paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Gradually add the flour and salt to the butter-sugar mixture until crumbly and well combined.
  • Press half of the crumb mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  • Pour the caramel sauce over the pressed crust, spreading it evenly.
  • Crumble the remaining dough over the caramel layer.
  • Sprinkle sea salt on top of the crumbles.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  • Allow to cool completely before cutting into bars.

Notes

These bars store well in an airtight container in the fridge for about a week. They can also be frozen for up to three months. Optional variations include adding nuts or spices.
