Ingredients
  

For the Bars

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour The backbone of our dessert.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Adds sweetness to the bars.
  • 1 tbsp baking powder Helps the bars puff up.
  • 1 tsp baking soda For extra lift.
  • 1/2 tsp salt Enhances sweetness and balances flavors.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed) Adds richness; should be cold for texture.
  • 1 cup buttermilk Adds moisture and tenderness.
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract Enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Adds rich, caramel-like sweetness.
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon The star player for flavor.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted) For topping.

For the Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened) Creates a rich, creamy topping.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened) Adds richness to the frosting.
  • 2 cups powdered sugar For sweetness and creamy texture.
  • 2 tbsp milk To adjust consistency.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract For extra flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Cut in the cold cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and vanilla extract, then mix it into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and ground cinnamon.

Assembly

  • Spread half of the batter into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle three-quarters of the cinnamon-sugar mixture on top.
  • Pour the remaining batter over and gently spread to cover the cinnamon layer, then swirl in the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Frosting and Serving

  • While the bars bake, beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  • Add in the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, and beat until creamy.
  • Once the bars are baked and cooled slightly, spread the cream cheese frosting on top.
  • Cut into squares and serve.

Notes

These bars taste even better the next day! Store leftovers in an airtight container. They can also be frozen for up to two months.
