  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed Essential for flaky texture. Do not skip this!
  • 1/4 cup sugar Adds a hint of sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Balances sweetness and enhances flavor.
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons) Critical for dough rise.
  • 3/4 cup milk, warmed Activates the yeast.
  • 1 whole egg for egg wash For a golden-brown finish.

Preparation

  • Combine warm milk and yeast in a small bowl, letting it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
  • Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough for about 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Roll the dough into a rectangle, place cubed butter on one half, and fold the other half over.
  • Roll it out again, keeping the butter enclosed, and fold into thirds. Repeat this 3-4 times.
  • Cut the dough into triangles and roll from the base to the point.
  • Place shaped croissants on a baking sheet and let them rise for about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and brush croissants with egg wash.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Keep butter cold to achieve flaky layers; don’t rush rising times. Croissant bread is perfect for customizing with fillings or toppings.
