Ingredients
  

For the Burgers

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20) Using ground beef with higher fat content ensures juiciness.
  • 1 tsp salt Helps form a crust when cooked.
  • 1 tsp black pepper Adds flavor to the patties.
  • 4 pieces burger buns Preferably soft and slightly toasted.
  • 4 slices American cheese For melting into the burger.

For the Secret Sauce

  • ½ cup mayonnaise Gives the sauce its creamy base.
  • ¼ cup ketchup A classic burger companion.
  • 1 tbsp relish Provides crunch and sweetness.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder Enhances flavor.
  • 1 tsp onion powder Adds umami.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat until hot.
  • Form the ground beef into four loose balls (about 4 ounces each).

Cooking

  • Place each ball on the grill and smash down with a spatula to flatten to about half an inch thick.
  • Cook for about two minutes, season with salt and pepper, flip the patties, and add cheese on top.
  • Cover the grill or pan to let the cheese melt (about one minute).
  • Toast the burger buns on the grill.

Assembly

  • Spread the easy secret sauce on both halves of the toasted buns.
  • Place the cheese-laden patty on the bottom bun, add additional toppings as desired, and top with the other bun.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, use cold beef and don't over-handle it. You can customize the sauce with hot sauce or mustard as desired.
