Ingredients
  

For the crust and topping

  • 1 pound unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon coarse sea salt (adjust to taste)

For the caramel layer

  • 1 bag caramel candies, unwrapped (or 2 cups soft caramel bits)
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C) and line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat together unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add vanilla extract and mix to combine.
  • Gradually add flour and mix until a thick dough forms.

Baking

  • Press half to two-thirds of the dough into the bottom of the prepared pan, smoothing it out evenly.
  • Bake for about 20 minutes or until light golden brown.
  • While baking, melt caramel candies and heavy cream together in a microwave-safe bowl or saucepan over low heat, stirring until smooth.
  • Pour the warm caramel over the baked crust and sprinkle coarse sea salt on top.
  • Crumble remaining dough over the caramel layer without pressing it down.
  • Bake again for another 25-30 minutes or until topping is set and lightly golden.

Cooling and Serving

  • Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before slicing.
  • For cleaner cuts, chill in the fridge for at least an hour before slicing.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For better preservation, refrigerate in warmer climates. These bars can also be frozen for up to a month.
